MODEL NAMING CONVENTIONS

Instructions

Please use the following naming convention(s) when creating/uploading new Revit Models to the Equip Studio BIM360 hub:

Format

[ A ]_[ B ]_[ C ]_[ D ]_[ E ].[ EXT ]

Requirements

  • Use an "_" to separate each Designator (see descriptions below).

  • Do not use spaces. Instead, use a capital letter to begin each word in a string.

    • Example: RunningBond

  • Use all capital letters for common acronyms.

  • Designators are CaSe sEnSiTiVe!

Adherence to this naming convention will ensure the best possible:

    • coordination experience

    • model upgrade process

    • organizational consistency

    • safe working environment for employees suffering from OCD

Designator Descriptions

[ A ] - Discipline

Each Revit model should be prefixed with text indicating which Discipline it is associated with.

Options:

    • Arch - Architectural Model

    • MEP - MEP Model

      • Mech - Mechanical Model

      • Electric - Electrical Model

      • Plumb - Plumbing Model

      • FP - Fire Protection Model

    • Struct - Structural Model

    • AVL - AVL Model

    • ID - Interior Design Model

    • Site - Site Model (Civil or Arch)

[ B ] - Project Designator

Each project has an assigned Project Designator. This will be communicated to all consultants at the beginning of the project so that their models are named correctly.

    • If you have not been given an assigned Project Designator, please contact the project manager.

[ C ] - Project Phase (Optional)

If you are working on a phased project and the Project Phase is not included in your assigned Project Designator, you should include that here.

Examples:

    • P01 - Phase 01

    • P02b - Phase 02b

[ D ] - Revit Version

This four-digit year represents the Revit Version of the model (and project).

Examples:

    • 2021 - This model is only accessible with Revit 2021.

[ E ] - Variants (Optional)

Occasionally, you may find that an additional string is needed as a suffix to your project name in order to identify certain Variants of models.

Examples:

    • Option01 - When creating design options with separate files.

    • Existing - When saving an unchanged existing version of the model.

    • Reference - When saving a copy of another model in a convenient place for easy access/reference.

[ EXT ] - File Extension

Options:

    • rvt - (Revit Model File Extension)

(The architectural model for 3Circle Church - South Campus created in Revit 2018.)

Arch_3CCS_P02_2024.rvt

(The architectural model for a Phase 02 addition to 3Circle Church - South Campus created in Revit 2024.)

Site_3CCS_2018.rvt

(The architectural/civil site model for 3Circle Church - South Campus created in Revit 2018.)

MEP_ARC_2021.rvt

(The MEP consultant model for Ashley Ridge Church created in Revit 2021.

Arch_3CCS_2021_Reference.rvt

(A reference only copy of an old 3Circle Church - South Campus model upgraded to Revit 2021 for easy access while working on another project.)
